Douglas Fir - looking for ideas...

Post by gilles » Sat Jul 23, 2022 8:04 am

I recently acquired a beautifully figured piece of Douglas Fir (or I think it's Douglas Fir. I live on the east coast of N.A. and would never have seen any before). Rough measurements are 40"x11"x1.25". When I found the wood, it was painted on both sides. Looking at the end grain, it looked plain sawn. When I ran it through a planer, I was surprised to see the beautiful grain structure. I know it would make a beautiful electric, but wondering if it's out of the question to consider it for an acoustic top... And yes, I know it's not quarter sawn...
Just looking for ideas and suggestions...

Jee, Gilles. I would say, for a solid body great. For an acoustic I would pass. That wild flat sawn wood will act unpredictible to changes in temperature and humidity IMO.

I would have to resaw it and make a four piece top. That grain is incredible! I built a 00 12 fret out of fir. It is a great top wood.
