Mahogany reclaimed from a boat

Post by Rangerdave1 » Fri Dec 27, 2019 11:22 pm

There hasn't been much movement on the forum lately so thought id post this for possible interest

I made a visit to Newfoundland, Canada for the holidays and met with a luthier friend and ended up with a piece of mahogany that was destined for the fire pit. Story behind the piece is that it was a part of an old coast guard boat in the old community in Battle Harbour Labrador which was resetled in the 60s. The boat was a small boat which from what i could understand was a safety boat for the main coast guard vessel. My friend discovered the boat was made of mahogany and got the boat before it got cut up for firewood. Thankfully it had been stored inside for all this time so there’s no rot. My friend has already built a few guitars out of it and it looks like excellent wood. I was lucky to get this piece which is quarter sawn and just big enough to cut two sets of OM sized back and sides providing I can get 4 slices out of it (its 1" thick)

I also got my hands on big stack of white spruce tops which were sliced up about 25 + years ago in Labrador as well.

Can not wait to start resawing and building something out of it.. stay tuned for the resaw results and a build thread in the future.

That looks like a great set of wood to get a guitar from. What do you have to resaw the mahogany?

I have a 14” bandsaw but with 12” resaw capacity, 2hp motor. The board is 11” wide but I’ll need to Cut out the sides and back profiles pieces prior to resawing any way.

I have already resawed some Rosewood with good results so this should Be easier.
